Battle Hill Primary School is the first in North Tyneside to be awarded Sustrans’ Silver School Mark Award for its outstanding commitment to cycling.

Sustrans schools officer Kian Mokhtary presented the award to congratulate children, parents and teachers for their efforts in increasing pupils’ cycling levels by transforming the school journey.

Activities at the school have included healthy bike breakfasts, a regular bike club, skills / safety sessions and rides, as well as hosting an Extreme Mountain Bike Show for finishing top in the area for Sustrans’ ‘Big Pedal’ School Challenge.

Headteacher Louise Wells said: “We are proud to be the first school in North Tyneside to get this award.

“We’re lucky to have some excellent safe off-road routes right on our doorstep which has helped increase the levels of cycling and scooting to school.”
